Three Card Poker

Posted on June 13, 2008

"Three card poker" is the subject of a recent news article in The San Francisco Chronicle. The game is apparently becoming quite popular on the West Coast, popular enough to warrant a newspaper article.

The Chronicle offers several reasons for the rise in popularity of three card poker:

  • Three card poker offers decent odds and some stellar payouts for some hands.
  • Three card poker is similar to perennial casino favorite Pai Gow poker.
  • Three card poker doesn't require a lot of poker knowledge for a player to be able to win.

Three card poker actually consists of 2 different games, just like Pai Gow poker does. One game is a traditional ante and bet poker game played against the house, while the second game is a bonus payout jackpot type game. The bonus payout game is an optional side bet. Any hand of 3 of a kind or better is eligible for a bonus payout, but only if the player made the optional side bet AND raised their 3 card poker hand.

According to the article, 4 casinos in the California area offer three card poker:

  1. 101 Casino
  2. River Rock Casino
  3. Cache Creek Casino
  4. Thunder Valley Casino

I've never played three card poker, but I might give it a try next time I'm in California.
